Mary J. Blige talks about new Movie role, Microwave artist, & Giving back in Allure magazine

July 22, 2010

Singer Mary J. Blige is featured in the latest issue of Allure Magazine. The undisputed Queen of R&B looks back over her near 20 year career and reflects on lessons learned, why she isn’t impressed with the new breed of “microwave artists” and what she has planned for the future.

Excerpts below…

Mary on the true meaning of being a diva: A true diva is a woman who works really hard and doesn’t let anyone get in their way. Divas do what they need in order to be satisfied.

Mary on why she doesn’t envy today’s young stars who often have overnight success: They’re not seasoned. We [referring to herself and her peers] went through the trenches which is why we are still here. I call it rotisserie versus microwave chicken. The rotisserie, you season it, let it marinate in your fridge overnight and then you put it in the oven. The microwave chicken you buy it frozen, and nine minutes later, you have a meal. But do you really want to eat that? I’d rather be the rotisserie

Mary on what she has been doing to prepare for her role as jazz legend Nina Simone: I have been doing what I call living in Nina-land. I have been doing a lot of reflecting on my own life and past growing up in Yonkers, New York. You know, watching women be abused and then eventually ending up in an abusive relationship myself

Mary on the parallels of her life and Simone’s: We have almost the same life. For a long time, I felt about myself how she felt about herself- we go really, really dark. I never was diagnosed as a manic depressive but who knows, maybe I should been

Mary on what the future holds for her: More movies definitely and just giving back to the community. After what I grew up on I vowed to not see a woman ever hurt again
