Mary J. Blige enthralls audience at one-night show

KUALA LUMPUR: Nine-time Grammy winner Mary J. Blige stunned the over 1,000-strong audience at the Plenary Hall in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last night with her soul-baring performance.

The American R&B superstar kicked off her show with MJB da MVP — a single from her seventh studio album The Breakthrough to launch into a string of over 30 songs, including a medley of 10 tunes from her past albums.

Family Affair wrapped up her 90-minute set.

Despite the encore of her inspirational Be Without You, also from The Breakthrough album, Mary left the crowd screaming for more.

With a minimal set-up — two backup dancers and three backing vocals, apart from her band — Mary got the crowd swaying with her string of hits.

Among the crowd-pleasers included Real Love, Not Gon’ Cry, No More Drama and even her rendition of One, which she had reworked with original singer, Bono of U2.

The much anticipated one-night only show in Kuala Lumpur is the only stopover of her "Music Saved My Life" world tour through Southeast Asia — her ninth concert tour, covering North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia supporting her ninth studio album Stronger with Each Tear that was released in 2009.

The 40-year-old retained her youthful energy on-stage throughout the show.

Though the crowd was slow to get on its feet, the momentum picked up mid-way.

Local stars in attendance at the event included singer Ziana Zain, Syafinaz, Melissa Indot and Mizz Nina and ntv7 television personality Daphne Iking and Deborah Henry, the newlycrowned Miss Universe Malaysia
