KUALA LUMPUR: American queen of hip-hop soul Mary J. Blige got a crowd of 2,500 rocking at her concert at the KL Convention Centre last night.

The singer-songwriter-record producer-actress, a recipient of nine Grammy Awards and four American Music Awards, certainly left her mark on her maiden visit to Malaysia, which was her only South-East Asian date for her Music Saved My Life world tour.

“Thank you for making me feel so welcomed,” the energetic 40-year-old, who donned a sparkling, silver cat-suit shouted to the cheering crowd. Blige, who had promised to blow fans away with her performance, belted out hits like Family Affair, I Am, Be Without You, No More Drama, Not Gon’ Cry and I’m Goin’ Down.

The singer, who has been on tour since October, was backed by her live band over the action-packed 90 minutes at the Plenary Hall.

The concert also attracted Blige’s fans from Indonesia, Australia, Europe, the United States and Africa.
Discovered when she was just 17 years old, the star shot to fame in 1992 with her debut album What’s The 411? Last November, Billboard Magazine ranked Blige as the most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years.
