Wall Street Journal: Junior League Honors Blige

March 7, 2011

This year's New York Junior League's Winter Ball—the organization's 59th—honored the singer Mary J. Blige with its award for Leadership and Excellence at the Plaza Hotel over the weekend.

"Her programming aligns so perfectly with ours," said Lisa Hathaway Stella, the current president of the Junior League, of Ms. Blige, who runs a nonprofit organization called the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN). "She's focused on mentoring and self-esteem, just like we are."

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, one of the 2,700 local members of the Junior League, served as the mistress of ceremonies. The evening, completely volunteer-planned, raised $500,000, which was "above our target," said Ms. Hathaway Stella. The funds support the organization's mission to provide trained volunteers in the community for service.

"We've been around for 110 years," said Ms. Hathaway Stella, "and the goal is to make sure we continue to make a difference in our communities for the next 110."
