Background on "Someone to Love Me"

April 5, 2011

With this week's release of Diddy's "Someone To Love Me (Naked)" music video, the song's producer Jerry Wonda reflects on how the record initially began as a tug-of-war between the rap mogul and Mary J. Blige.

"Someone To Love Me" is a record that I did [before] Puff heard the track. When he heard it, he immediately said, "I need this." So I gave it to him and he went crazy on it. But at the same time, I was working on the Mary J. Blige album. And when I was at the studio playing the song, Mary said, "Stop playing, I 'need' this." That's when she called Puff and said, "I'm taking this record!"

Puff and Mary are like brother and sister. And Puff was like, "Oh you want it? I already got a video, man!" And so Mary said, "I don't care! This record is mine!" So I said, OK, and put up the track and the next thing you know, Mary went in on it.

So Mary was doing the record and said, "You know what? We need to put someone in there." So then Mary called Lil Wayne and Wayne heard it. Then it just took off. That record is such a movement and it's a global thing. People are calling and loving the music I'm putting out right now.

At this point in my life, I'm doing albums. I've did about three, four, five joints on the Mary album and I just finished Musiq Soulchild's album. That's what I'm on right now. So when you hear a song like "Someone To Love Me", you can see that I'm hitting the streets hard. I'm knocking them. I love hip-hop and doing other sounds too. I love blending music. I'm all over the place. It's music..
