The No More Drama hitmaker's song I Can See In Color was featured in gritty 2009 drama Precious, and Blige is continuing her foray into films by starring as jazz singer Nina Simone in upcoming biopic Nina.
But Blige insists she's choosy about her big screen projects and would never have considered lending her music to a movie such as Tim Burton's adaptation of fantasy tale Alice in Wonderland.
She tells Britain's Sunday Times Magazine, "In order for something to come across as real, you have to know it yourself. That's why I gravitate to films like Precious and why I'm playing the role of Nina in her upcoming biopic.
"Poverty, molestation, suicidal thoughts, drugs, alcohol... I have lived it. I couldn't work on something like Alice in Wonderland. That's not real. How can I move a group of people with that? What I have to do is just bigger than junk.
"I have a responsibility which is bigger than just the singing. It's God working through me."
